Electric Fan and Portable AC Working Together for Cooling

When you get home on a hot day, your first inclination may be to turn on the air conditioning to its coldest setting. But energy experts say that doesn’t speed the cooling process. In fact, it makes your AC unit work harder than necessary. This uses even more energy, which is reflected on your utility bill.

There are other ways to maximize the cold air that come from your air conditioner. Using an electric fan with your A/C can significantly reduce the hot temps in your home – and reduce your energy bill. By positioning an electric cooling fan near portable ac or near window unit A/Cs or near  central air vents, you can circulate the cool air over a wider area. Here’s a look at how it works.

Why Not Just Use the Portable AC?(The advantage of using fan and Portable AC together)

It may seem counterproductive to run your electric fan and your portable AC at the same time, since both use energy to operate. The trick is to use them wisely, and on lower settings. For the AC, this means keeping the thermostat closer to the temperature outside. If it’s 80 degrees outside, that means setting the AC to run at 78 or 75 instead of 70.

When you run both the AC and an electric cooling fan, you have the potential to subtract another 4 degrees from that number – dropping the 78 to a 74 or 75 to 71. That’s because fans circulate the cold air coming from the AC much more efficiently than the central AC is able to handle on its own. As heat rises, cold air sinks closer to the floor.

Your AC vents push cold air out, but the air tends to settle instead of circulate. Meanwhile, if your home has a second floor, all the heat is trapped in the upper rooms of the house.

Using an electric cooling fan to disrupt the settled cold air and push it up and outward allows the cold air to move into hot spaces and disperse. It creates true air circulation and, if your fan is powerful enough, cycles and moves the air through the whole home, lowering the temperature and your power bills.

Creating an Indoor Wind Chill:

When using fans with air conditioning to boost the cooling effect in your home, you have multiple, powerful options to choose from. The classic pedestal fan or box fan are trusted favorites when it comes to keeping cool in homes with central air conditioning.

Place your fan beside or under the vent where the air conditioner comes out to push the air out into your space. Fans can also be placed with their head tilted down so that the cool air sinking to the floor is forced to move upward and cool the room. A box fan that sits on the floor is right at the level where the cool air settles. The high capacity strength of box fans packs a powerful blow, aggressively moving the air where needed.

You can also strategically position your box fans alongside window air conditioning units to create a wind chill effect. Window air conditioning units need extra help in distributing cold air. If there are multiple units in the home or apartment, multiple fans can be used to circulate cold AC air to the rooms where the AC alone may not reach. Air circulators are faster than other  electric cooling fans, engineered to deliver a stronger wind factor.

Other Fan + Air Conditioner Tips and Tricks:

Creating a wind chill with multiple fans is great for homes with a single floor. Multi-story homes may need to use multiple fan and window air conditioner layouts, or can rely on other energy-saving fan techniques, such as evacuating hot air with a window fan and keeping shades down during the day.

Electric Fan Vs. Portable AC(Pros and Cons)

Electric Fan and air conditioner fill separate roles in the household. While fans can cool you down, only an air conditioner can cool down the air itself. When heat leaves our body, it goes into the air. Fans push air across us faster, meaning there’s more chance for that heat to escape.

However, at a certain point, it becomes too hot for a fan to help much. As the heat climbs into the eighties and nineties (Fahrenheit), the air can’t take much heat from us, even with the fan’s help. As it goes over 95℉, it can actually make us hotter. Electric Fans are great, but they can’t be our only tool.

Because it just moves air, a fan will never cool down a room by itself. Unless used in conjunction with an AC, cold outside air, or some other source of cool air, it only helps you cool down. The myth that leaving a fan on all night can cause hypothermia is just that: a myth.

Portable AC actually make the air colder. Using a special gas called a refrigerant, they leech heat from the air inside and release it back outside. Just like your refrigerator, they give off heat, but they release it outside of the house.

Air conditioners also remove humidity from the air in the process. The lack of moisture in the air helps you to feel cooler and cool down better. Wet air simply has too much water in it for your sweat to evaporate your heat away! Between its cooling power and its dehumidifying, an air conditioner can really help you beat the heat.

How to Use a Fan to Improve a Portable AC?

The first and most important step to up your cool without raising the bills is just to get air moving around. Any type of electric cooling fan can do this, though ceiling fans can be particularly effective. Just having them on can push that pool of cold air lying on the floor up and around your house, making the AC that much more efficient.

Circulating air doesn’t only help the cold air get around more easily, but it helps keep air moving across your skin too. While the now-circulating air will be cooler on your body already, the breeze will whisk more of your heat away. This can let you turn the AC 3-5℉ higher while still feeling cooler. Since every degree higher is an energy savings of about 3%, this can cut a tenth off your bills!

Be mindful of where you set up your fan. If your thermostat is right in front of a vent, it might be in a cold spot. Because of this, it will think your house is colder than it is and shut off. By blowing that air away, you can get a more even cool. On the other hand, if you’ve got a part of the house you aren’t using, you don’t need to make sure it keeps as cool. Shut the doors and save your electricity!

You can also use an electric fan to cut down the hours you need to run your AC. If it gets cool at night, you can put a fan in the window to pull in that cold air (or push out that hot air). Close the windows in the morning when it starts to heat up, and your house will not only be chilled out, but aired out. That’s a real luxury in the hot summer.

Can You Blow Cool Air into the Next Room?

Putting a fan in a doorway is a great way to move air from one room to the next. Doorways function as bottlenecks, slowing the flow of air, and so a fan is a great way to solve this.

A word of warning: when blowing air into another room, make sure your air conditioner can handle the burden. A central air system properly sized for your house will never have a problem with this, but a window air conditioner can only do so much.

A window unit capable of cooling 300 square feet in a 275 square feet bedroom probably works great. If you try to use a fan to have it cool a 400 square feet living space as well, you’re suddenly asking it to do over twice the work it’s rated for. While it might cool down both rooms somewhat, you’re probably never going to get the temperature you want and you’ll definitely overwork your Air conditioner.

How to Get the Most out of Your Air Conditioner Bills?

A fan is a great trick to have up your sleeve when fighting the heat of summer. Used with your air conditioner, you can improve your cool and extend the unit’s life. This isn’t the only way to keep your AC running as cheaply, effectively, and healthily as possible. Here’s a few tips:

Don’t be too cool: Everyone wants to keep as cool as possible in the summer but dropping the temperature even one degree takes a lot of power. See how high you can set your thermostat, turning it up one degree at a time. Especially with a fan, you might be surprised.

Cool it with the off switch: It takes a lot of power to cool a room down. It takes a lot less power to keep it cool. If you need to run a quick errand, it’s best not to shut down the AC, but just to put it on low. This also saves a lot of wear and tear. Feel free to turn off those extra fans, though.

Get your annual check up: The best way to keep your mobile air conditioners working well is to make sure it doesn’t stop working well. Get a tune up every spring (and check the filters at least twice that often). A professional is a big help here. Unlike a fan, there’s a lot that needs to be maintained in an air conditioner.
